About 60 km away from the campsite, north-east of Trento, near the village Aldino (South Tyrol), you’ll find the Bletterbach Canyon, also called Grand Canyon of South Tyrol, which can be visited by families with children. You have to go to Trento and from there take the motorway A22 to Bolzano and drive until you reach Egna/Neumarkt or Ora/Auer. Then take the SS41 and follow the signs for Aldino and continue for other 5 km until you reach the visitor information centre of Lahneralm, Bletterbach.
The canyon Bletterbach is situated under the Corno Bianco (Weisshorn in German) and shows clear signs of erosion of the mountain and the valley below. The Bletterbach river has carved a gorge over the years and on the path you can see the various layers of stone and terrain. The gorge is 8 km long and 400 m deep. The whole area is an UNESCO World Heritage site. The ticket costs 4 Euros, children enter for free and you can rent a helmet for 1 euro. A marked path leads to the canyon. From there you have to follow the river upwards until you reach the Butterloch Waterfall. Along the way you will also find fossils such as mussels, snails and cephalopods. On the way back from the waterfall, there is a a steep path, called “Jaegersteig”. However, the amazing view that you can enjoy from the waterfall is worth all the effort. From there an easy route will bring you to the starting point, at the visitor information centre. Total length: 3 km.
